The rank card and the heart that is wild
Every round has a “rank”, and the cards matching it get strange and powerful. This is the idea that makes Guandan Guandan.
Your team is always playing for a number — the rank. You begin at 2 and climb with every win toward A. Whatever the current rank is, all four cards of that number become rank cards: every 2 while you are at rank 2, every 9 at rank 9.
Two kinds of power
First, as a single a rank card beats an ace and sits just below the jokers. Second — and this is the twist — the two hearts among them are wild. A heart rank card can stand in for any card except a joker, filling a straight or growing a bomb from four cards to five, six, even ten.
There is a cost. Because that number has left the sequence, at rank 9 you can no longer slide a 9 into a straight. The rank giveth and the rank taketh away — learning to feel that trade is most of becoming good.
